Ubuntu Linux Certified Professionals Training in South Africa
Obsidian has announced that it will soon commence official training courses for the ‘Certified Ubuntu Professional’ programme. As per the press release on the Ubuntu website, South Africa will provide leading facilities for training of Ubuntu Linux professionals.
Obsidian has announced that it will soon commence official training for the ‘Ubuntu Certified Professional’ programme. Obsidian has concluded an agreement with Canonical Ltd, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu Linux that allows for the company to provide training beginning March 2008.
Robin Edser, Technology Manager of Obsidian comments, “It is fantastic that Ubuntu has reached the level where relevant certified training has become available for Linux professionals. Obsidian looks forward to providing this in the South African market and contributing to the growth in use of Ubuntu Linux in professional applications.”
Obsidian will be providing both Ubuntu Professional Courses 1 and 2, which will assist System Administrators to pass the required Linux Professional Institute (LPI) 101 and 102 and Ubuntu 199 exams in order to achieve the Ubuntu Certified Professional certification. These courses are two of a series of classroom and e-learning courses available for Ubuntu Linux professionals.
An increasing number of corporations worldwide are turning to Ubuntu, the world’s fastest growing Linux distribution, as a solution for their server and desktop requirements. The training ensures that professionals acquire the tools which will enable them to administer those deployments.
“South Africa has made great strides with open source and Linux since its inception and we are delighted by the growth in demand for Ubuntu-based solutions and professionals” says Chris Kenyon, Business Development Director at Canonical. “The Obsidian Group has pioneered Linux education and consultancy services in South Africa and is the first to partner with Canonical on Ubuntu certified training in the region. We are confident that they will provide excellent service to a great number of companies and professionals across South Africa.”

Developer Collaboration - Canonical launches Bazaar based on Python under GPL License
Canonical has released the stable version of Bazaar - A Distributed Software Version control system for distributed teams of innovative and open source, modern sommunity based software development.
Bazaar 1.0 has been written in Python software language - a software language that is much in demand and commands a lot of respect in the Open Software community - which sadly is lacking in India presently due even though Indian software majors have garnered immense amounts of profits but for strategic reasons are not very happy to promote the spread of free and open source software among Indian schools, colleges and universities due to fear of disturbing their monopolies and business models.
Among the features of BAZAAR are :
1. Software developers who are familiar with ECLIPSE Software development platform, can begin to be very productive as they can learn and use BAZAAR easily and in short learning curve.
2. It is based on stable Python API and is compatible with Python versions 2.4 and above. It already has a set of about 20 Plugins, available for immediate use by communities of software developers.
3. No need for coordination with central code base as Commits can be made independently.
4. Features and fixes can be developed in independent branches and merged into main development trunk at any time. This feature is ideal for teaching distributed software development to students in remote locations of India.
5. Software development can be done in creative models, whether as creative and intelligent individual developers, who contribute more code than others, or as cooperating software teams.
6. Dual level of support is available for the GNU GPL licensed Bazaar as users can buy commercial support or if their software developers and teams are really world class, they can use freely available and generous shared community support.

Dell Computers announces Linux Ubuntu Laptops
One of the world's biggest computer and laptop manufacturers - Dell - has announced that as part of its corporate growth strategy - that it has begun installing Ubuntu 7.10 / Gutsy Gibbon, on its Dell consumer Linux PCs in the United States and will also make it available on the Inspiron 530 in England, France and Germany before the end of 2007.
Dell began offering consumer systems running Ubuntu in May 2007. Ubuntu’s Gutsy Gibson has been available on laptops since October.
The OEM and laptop testing teams of Dell have been testing the code and hardware drivers for several weeks and are ready to launch the Ubuntu 7.10 Laptop based on the free and open source Ubuntu Linux operating system.
“We believe Ubuntu 7.10 is a solid step forward for both Linux enthusiasts as well as the mainstream consumer market,” wrote Daniel Judd, Product Group Strategist on the Dell2Dell blog on Tuesday. “The answer is simple. With any operating system, we take gold code and take the time to do extensive testing on our systems to make sure that customers have as few issues as possible.”
Daniel Judd, Dell product manager has cited “cool” 3-D visual effects, easier desktop search for applications and the “ability to quickly switch between users and easily share a system with family members” as key new features of Ubuntu’s 7.10 release. He has also cited two minor Dell developed innovations much in demand by younger generation of laptop users — pre-installation of Flash and improved recovery options — as other significant enhancements for Gutsy Gibbon on Dell consumer PCs.
Judd also one key request was the ability to watch DVD movies from the Dell Linux desktop. “We totally agree and that’s why we now include built-in DVD movie playback with all Ubuntu 7.10 systems. The experience we wanted is simple — when you put a movie in, it plays. It is easy enough for a child and an example of the steps we are taking to make Ubuntu as enjoyable as possible.
